Sumoto Castle

About Sumoto Castle

 It is handed down that Sumoto Castle (Upper Castle) was built by Mr.Atagi, who took command of Awaji Navy, in the 6th of the Daiei period (in 1526).

 Later, Yasuharu Wakisaka, who entered it in the 13th of the Tensho period (in 1585), repaired it to the present castle of entire stone wall.

 After Mr.Wakisaka moved to Iyo Ozu in the 14th of the Keicho period (in 1609), it ruined in fact. But the castle still has been maintaining it's dignity.

 There still remained magnificent entire stone wall, great stone steps and a few ascending stone wall all over Japan.

 In addition, the keep tower base has Japanese oldest imitation keep tower which was built of reinforced concreate in 1928.

 We can look out over noto only Sumoto city but also Osaka Bay from there. It's a storong castle which is woethy of being called the fort of South Seas.

 Sumoto Castle (Lower Castle) was built in Momoyama period at first. But it seems that stone walls and moats we can look today were built after Kanei period (in 1630s), when Mr.Hachisuka transfered the base of ruling in Awaji from Yura to Sumoto.

 Besides upper castle designated a national historic site in the 11th of the Heisei period (in 1999). And lower castle also designated a historic site of Sumoto city.

 Ascending stone wall, which increased defensive strength by connecting upper and lower, is a rare ancient structural remnant and a few all over Japan.

 It was appreciate to preserve it fine condition. For that reason, it was selected the sequel in April 6th, 2017 (in the 29th of Heisei period).
